Quilting with Deb

February 12 and 26, 1:00 to 4:00 pm, $35 each class, Min: 3 students

Using the free 3D PopStar pattern, you will complete a 50 inch square lap quilt with nine blocks and an outer border.

This class is perfect for new quilters who have mastered the quarter inch seam and are ready to go to the next level. Its focus is on careful cutting, sewing half square triangles into stars, and pressing seams that nestle, and learning how to complete different units within a larger block.

February 12 Class
In this session you will learn to how to:

  • Construct one block at a time
  • Accurately cut fat quarters to pattern measurements
  • Organize the pieces that go with each unit
  • Sew seams for perfect points and edges
  • Check the accuracy of each unit’s measurement
  • Keep your block square and how to press seams for nestling

Deb will demonstrate how to construct each of the four separate units in the star block, one at a time, with you then creating each unit and attaching units as you go along. There will be samples of each unit for you to refer to as you then construct your second block with support. You will also receive a copy of the pattern with Deb’s notes, reminders, and tips.

February 26 Class
In this session you will:

  • Continue building blocks (for a total of 9)
  • Check each block for accurate measurement of 14.5 inches
  • Learn how to problem solve if blocks are ‘a little off’
  • Sew blocks together matching and nestling seams to form a strip
  • Sew strips matching seams and points
  • Place borders and cornerstones and order in which they should be placed

Supplies:
*3D Pop Star Quilt pattern (Deb will provide for you)
*9 Fat quarters: 3 light, 3 medium, and 3 dark values
*Background fabric (lightest or white): 1 3/4 yards
*Shadow Fabric and binding: 1 1/2 yards
*Backing: 3 1/2 yards

For background and Shadow try a fabric that reads like a solid but not necessarily solid. For instance, it may have a white on white or a dark on dark. Deb used a Moda grunge series, Knit One Quilt Too carries some Moda grunges.

All your usual quilting supplies:
rotary cutter, large 24 inch rulers, 2.5 inch wide ruler if you have one, measuring tape, good pair of fabric scissors, ecru or light khaki thread (easier to see when you need to reseam), extra packet of sewing machine needles, extra bobbins, glass head pins (they don’t melt under iron), a sewing machine with which you are familiar (OR let me know if you need to use class machine).

Note: Deb will show you how to check for quarter inch seam allowances if you don’t have a quarter inch foot on your machine.
