Saturday, December 10 and 17, 1:00 to 4:00 pm | $40 each class
Prerequisite: Consistent 1/4 inch seams
This is an easy beginner half square triangle pattern just in time for the winter season. The tree is made from precut 5 x 10 inch rectangles or from ten inch precut squares, also known as layer cakes, which you can find at the shop.
A layer cake of 42 pieces will give you more than enough fabric for this pattern. If you wish to cut 5×10 inch fabrics from fat quarters you will need a minimum of 8 different fabrics. An advantage to precuts is they save cutting time. You will receive a free pattern for the tree quilt in the first class along with detailed instructions.
The simplicity of the pattern allows for that scrappy look. Fabric scraps smaller than 5×10, by their nature, may not yield a precise straight of grain that half triangle squares require.
This quilt would be beautiful using natural colors reminiscent of a walk in the woods or using festive holiday fabric. Variety is the fabric spice in this pattern while including values of lights, mediums, and darks.
You will learn how to make precise half square triangles without the need to paper piece. You will learn how to build units to make the tree and then add varying sized rectangles to complete each row. The quilt is also a workable size for self quilting using a simple free motion meander should you choose to do so.
