Fabric Collage, what is it really? Is it playful, imaginative, adventurous, fun, relaxing, exciting, unique, and has no rules? For sure!!! And no rules?? Really? Oh yes…really!!! All you need is your love for colorful fabrics, your innate sense of color palette, values, and your artist muse. You will bring your bags or boxes of scraps that have patiently awaited their debut and transform them into an art quilt. No need to buy new fabrics less you wish to add to your stash.
In this three-day workshop, you will create a small unique wall hanging as you learn to play with simple fabric collage techniques. You will choose from several of Susan Carlson’s simple patterns in her book Serendipity Quilts which will provide a beginning structure to guide your learning.
If you’ve pieced traditional quilts before, you’ll find fabric collage a different kind of quilting experience. It leaves out the precision of piecing in favor of the artist’s innate love of fabrics, color, value, and design embedded within your imagination and the sharing of ideas among fellow students.
This three-day workshop will be led by Deb Allard from Somerset, MA, who studied with Susan Carlson while living in New Hampshire for more than ten years. In fact, Deb has followed Susan’s work from the moment she picked up her first book, Free Style Quilts in 2000. Susan’s techniques are quite simple to learn and now Deb designs her own fabric collage quilts using her own photographs and drawings.
Deb loves quilting and sewing functional art of all kinds but has a special delight for fabric collage because it feels so freeing.
This three-day workshop will lead you through the simple techniques of fabric collage while applying your use of color, texture, values, and unique design elements. You will leave the workshop having paved a strong path towards completion of your art quilt. Free motion quilting will also be discussed.
You can purchase an autographed copy of Susan Carlson’s book at Knit One Quilt Too to view the patterns with which you might like to play. Deb will also be available by email to support you while working on your project at home and will have enlarged copies of each pattern from Susan’s book with which you will sketch onto muslin.
Materials you will need to bring to the Fabric Collage class
— Serendipity Quilts by Susan Carlson (autographed copies purchased at the shop)
— Pins (should you prefer to work vertically using foam board available for use)
— Good fabric scissors (A MUST)
— Tweezers with sharp points found at pharmacy stores; flat ends don’t hold fabric as well (optional)
— 1 yard of 45” muslin, pre-washed and ironed if you have time
— Your stash of scraps and fabrics, separated into values of light, medium, and dark
— Clear ziplock bags to hold scraps
— Bottle of Tacky Glue or Roxanne’s if you prefer
— Graphite pencil #2 (Can be found at art supply shop. Regular writing pencils don’t quite leave a line on fabric that is clearly distinguishable.)
